Why a Sub-Zero Stops Cooling

A Sub-Zero that runs but will not hold temperature is one of the most common calls we take in Breckenridge. Here is how the cause is found, and the handful of checks worth doing before you book.

The short answer: a Sub-Zero usually stops cooling for one of four reasons, and only one of them is a serious sealed-system failure. In order of how often we see them in the high country, the causes are a condenser choked with dust and pet hair, a defrost fault that has frosted the evaporator solid, an evaporator fan that has quit, and a refrigerant leak in the sealed system. Working through them in that order saves a lot of guesswork.

Start with the Condenser

Every built-in and column Sub-Zero pulls air across a condenser to shed the heat it removes from the food. On classic units that condenser sits behind the grille at the top; on newer models it is lower. When it packs with dust it cannot reject heat, the compressor runs longer and hotter, and the box slowly warms. At Breckenridge elevation the thinner air already makes heat rejection harder, so a dirty condenser tips a Sub-Zero into a warm state faster here than it would in Denver. Vacuuming and brushing it every three to six months is model-specific owner maintenance, and on more than a few visits it is the whole fix.

Understand the Two Sealed Systems

This is the detail that trips people up. Most Sub-Zero built-ins and columns run two completely independent sealed systems, one for the freezer and one for the fresh food side. That is why a freezer can be rock solid at zero while the fresh food compartment climbs into the 50s. When one side is warm and the other is fine, the problem is almost never a single dead compressor. It is that side's defrost circuit, its evaporator fan, or a leak on that one system. A technician confirms which system is affected before touching anything.

Defrost and Airflow

If frost blankets the evaporator, cold air cannot move and the compartment warms even though the system is making cold. A failed defrost heater, a bad defrost sensor, or a control that is not commanding a defrost cycle all lead there. The tell is a section that cools well for a day after you unplug and thaw it, then slowly warms again as the frost rebuilds. That pattern points at defrost, not the compressor.

Safe Checks Before You Book

Confirm the unit still has power and the light comes on. Make sure interior vents are not blocked by tall containers. Pull the grille and check whether the condenser is packed with dust. If the box is warming with food inside, move perishables to a working unit while you arrange service. Do not add refrigerant or open the sealed system; that is technician work and, at altitude, a correct charge matters.

Related

How Warm Is Too Warm for a Sub-Zero Fresh Food Section?
A fresh food compartment should hold near 38 degrees. If it drifts past the mid-40s and stays there, the food safety window is closing and the unit needs a look at the defrost system, airflow and sealed system.
Can I Clean the Sub-Zero Condenser Myself?
Yes. Vacuuming and brushing the condenser behind the upper grille every few months is owner maintenance and often restores a marginal unit, especially at Breckenridge altitude where heat rejection is already harder.
Why Is One Side Cold and the Other Warm?
Most built-in and column Sub-Zeros run two independent sealed systems. A cold freezer with a warm fresh food side usually points to that side's defrost or airflow, not a whole-unit compressor failure.
